Project Engineer Requirements & Qualifications


  • 10+ years of construction experience
  • Proven background in heavy civil construction, including pipelines, sewage, water treatment plants, or water storage projects
  • Previous experience in a field project engineer role for a construction contractor
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or construction management preferred
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
  • Valid driver’s license
  • First Aid and CPR certification
  • Competent Person training


Project Engineer Preferred Background & Skills


  • Experience mentoring project management staff
  • Proficiency with project scheduling, documentation, and contract management
  • Comfort working in physically active, outdoor, and team-oriented environments


Project Engineer Day-to-Day Responsibilities


  • Act as the on-site representative, ensuring professional communication with all project stakeholders
  • Lead field engineering activities, managing schedules, budgets, and safety protocols
  • Enforce safety policies, document meetings and inspections, and coordinate with OSHA representatives
  • Review project documents and prepare summaries of specifications and requirements
  • Oversee project setup, including contracts, initial documentation, and pre-construction meetings
  • Coordinate logistics, procurement, and material deliveries to support successful project execution
  • Support project closeout procedures, including punch list development and final walkthroughs
  • Mentor project team members, participate in hiring and evaluations, and foster professional growth
