Position: Surgical Support Technician (Win From Within Program)
Location: Mercy St. Louis Hospital, Main Operating Room
This opportunity is designed for current Mercy caregivers who are enrolled in an approved Surgical Technologist (ST) program. Through the Win From Within Program, Mercy provides educational assistance while participants prepare for a Surgical Technologist career.
Program Benefits
- Mercy pays up to $10,000 per year for eligible educational expenses.
- Funding is available for up to 3 years.
- Payments are made directly to the approved school.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be a Mercy Hospital St. Louis caregiver enrolled in an approved Surgical Technologist program.
- Have been employed with Mercy for at least 3 months.
- Work in a clinical role at least 16 hours per pay period.
- Have no active written disciplinary actions.
- Sign a work commitment agreement requiring them to remain at the same Mercy facility for 1 to 3 years after graduation, depending on the amount of educational assistance received.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience
- No experience required.
- One year of clinical hospital experience preferred.
Certifications
- BLS certification required upon hire or within 90 days.
- CNA certification may be required depending on the department/location.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.
- Prolonged standing and walking throughout shifts.
- Frequent bending, kneeling, twisting, squatting, reaching, and gripping.
Key Responsibilities
Safety & Risk Management
- Follow Mercy policies regarding safety, confidentiality, and patient rights.
- Practice infection prevention measures.
- Support patient safety initiatives, including:
- Fall precautions
- Patient identification procedures
- Safe patient handling
- Restraint management
- Unit-specific safety protocols
- Participate in quality improvement activities.
Technology
- Utilize department technology and communication tools, including:
- Computers
- Pagers
- Zone phones
- Rover devices
- Other unit-specific systems
Ideal Candidate
A current Mercy caregiver who is pursuing Surgical Technologist education, maintains good employment standing, enjoys working in a fast-paced clinical environment, and is able to meet the physical demands of an operating room support role.
